Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 35th Ann. Conv., 2011

Indonesia is mostly rural withthe agricultural sector as the backbone of localeconomic strength, i.e. Suka Makmur village. Suka Makmur village is a settlement area located within Medco E&P Indonesias exploration and production area at Soka Field SSE(South Sumatera Extention)Block. Most villagers make their living from farmingbased on social mapping using a multi-stakeholder engagementapproach. The main problems for the Suka Makmur farmers are to access fertilizer and the low productivity from their rice fields. In responding to such problems, Medco E&P Indonesia, through its community development program has attempted to find out what the root problems are and to recommend a program thatwill help increase agricultural production and overall company image. The objectives of the implementation Organic SRI program are:A. Farmers (Communities):1. Improve farmers' incomes by lowering production costs (no need to buy industrial fertilizer and pesticides)2. Increase agricultural production3. Facilitate farmers' self sufficiencyB. Environment:1. Reduce production of methane gas and its negative impact on the land2. Land ecosystem improvement through repairing the physical and chemical character of the land using organic fertilizer and pesticides3. Reduce CO and CO2 production by eliminating the burning of dried rice stalksC. Corporate:1. License to operate by preparing and implementing all programs that were submitted and approved by GoI (Government of Indonesia) through BPMIGAS.2. Improve eeputation/image by developing program that links to global aims or issues such as UN-MDGs (Millenium Development Goals) and Proper RatingMedco E&P Indonesia has implemented this program by encouraging the participation of the local community with various phases such as evaluation of soil quality, preparation of the land, and production of organic fertilizer, leading to full implementation and development of the program. Assistance is offered to the targeted farmers in the form of courses and workshops in the field, and the program is continually monitored to optimize the chances of success. The Organic SRI (System of Rice Intensification) program was initiated in March 2009 in Suka Makmur Village, BTS Ulu Sub-District, Musi Rawas District, South Sumatera Province, on land of 15 hectares owned by local farmers. The results obtained after the implementation of this program are as follows:1. Farmers incomes (community) increased because the agriculture production costs declined by up to 60% and production increased by more than 300%.2. Improvement to environment by reduction of methane, CO & CO2 gas and the ecosystem is gradually recovering3. Improved company image by Receiving UNMDGs Award in 2009 (GenderEquality) and Certificate of Recognation in 2010 (Environmental Sustainability) that was broadcast nationwide.4. Improved company image as a green company by grant as a “Proper Hijau Company for Proper Rating that was given by Vice President of Republic of Indonesia in 2010.
