Integrated geo-computational approach to identify by-passed oil: a case study in Seruni Field, Sumatra

Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 29th Ann. Conv., 2003

To increase oil recovery is a major challenge in PT. Caltex Pacific Indonesia (CPI) to anticipate a significant decrease of total production in Central Sumatra. As drilling targets become subtler, and an increased emphasis on enhanced oil recovery schemes is to be implemented, the need for detailed reservoir characterization and description will continue to grow.A comprehensive reservoir characterization has been carried out in Seruni Field, within the area of CPIPSC Rokan Block. The work involves advanced technology and data such as Chevron EDGE@ (Edge Detection of Geologic Events) to provide a seismic discontinuity volume for automatic 3D fault framework interpretation. Seismic guided reservoir property estimation is being implemented using seismic attributes. A geostatistical approach is used to model reservoir properties in a stratigraphic grid, which is layered by sequence stratigraphic surfaces and bounded by sedimentary facies as a background. Principle component analysis is used to quickly interpret seismic horizons and a nested variogram and collocated co-kriging technique is applied to significantly reduce mistie in converting time horizons to depth. The extended effort in developing a 3D geo-cellular model based on sedimentary facie s and sequence stratigraphy provides a new approach to identify bypassed oil using automatic seed picking of flowunits from perforation intervals in producing wells. The final products are bypassed oil maps, which are used to identify remaining potential and propose new development wells.
