Key challenges in mature field development – case study from Tanjung, Indonesia
Year: 2014
Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 38th Ann. Conv., 2014
In the spirit of increasing oil production for Indonesia, mature field optimization plays an important role in a field development plan (FDP). The Tanjung field, located in South Kalimantan, has been producing since 1950 but is now losing its low-hanging fruits and becoming more challenging to be optimized. Several FDPs were developed and the lesson learnt was obtained from the deviation of the plans.
The deviation from the FDPs is due mainly to the accumulation of the uncertainties and risk encountered in each phase of planning. The deviation started from the reservoir characterization, flow dynamic properties, well reservoir penetration and production optimization, well design, drilling and completion, to well support surface facilities design and implementation.
When developing a mature field, several factors have to be considered to improve secondary and tertiary recovery instead of only a primary one. Geological review, reservoir modeling, and well placement become very important in the early stage of the plan. A geomechanic model for the study of the Tanjung field as the bridging of the completion and drilling teams is one of the strategies implemented and proved to improve the production throughout the field life. During the drilling phase, the casing design and well integrity are significantly crucial, as the integrity of the well is not necessarily for production only but also for future completion, such as hydraulic fracturing and EOR (Enhanced Oil Recovery). From the EOR standpoint, reservoir modeling plays significant role in optimizing the recovery.
This paper describes the challenges in each key task of mature field development planning, focusing on three key areas for improving quality assurance in reservoir simulation, drilling and completion, and production system. The Tanjung field development was used to illustrate the requirement of pre-during-post FDP strategies and approaches. The paper also provides simple and standard requirements, including the workflow for mature field development in the future.
