To assure VICO fulfills its commitment to produce gas and oil, many efforts have been done starting from drilling, production to transmission. Unfortunately, there will be no products without creating waste. Annually VICO produces 6,000 m3 of cuttings, 5,000 bbls mud, 25,000 bbls of brine and drilling liquid, 400 drums of chemicals, 25,000 bbls of oily sludge, 16 million bbls of produced water, 3,000 drums of lube oil, 1,000 m3 of various B3 waste and 1 million tons of CO2 and 500 hectares of land clearing. To manage this huge amount of waste, VICO applies 5 environmental principles on waste: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Treatment, and Dispose.Reduce efforts are in fuel/energy efficiency, process modification, material elimination, inventory control and elimination, material substitution and better housekeeping.Reuse efforts focus on synthetic oil base mud, filtered brine, idle flow-line, used tubular (pipe, tubing), tire used for land stabilization, scrap material, use of double side paper and mulch.Recycle efforts involve the use of vented gas jumper line, oily waste centrifuge, used lubricant oil back to process and scrap materials.Treatment and Dispose efforts are conducted after Reduce, Reuse and Recycle effort and are focused on in-house programs by considering environmental assessment, regulation compliance, and looking for best practices. Treatments efforts relate to oily sludge handling, in-house waste injection, incineration, phenol removal, API separator, drum cleaning, and bacteria nursery. Dispose efforts involve produced water and liquid waste re-injection, land farming and solidification.By applying the above principles and by choosing the right in-house waste treatment, millions of dollars per annum have been saved. The implementation of the 5 environmental principles has not only saved million US dollars but has also caused VICO to be recognized as an environmental pioneer among the PSCs in Indonesia. This effort has also led VICO to ISO14001 certification and was instrumental in achieving good results on its PROPER program. The most important thing is that VICO has not only dug out all Indonesian natural resources but has also proved to be caring and responsible.
