Multiple Transverse Hydraulic Fracturing Horizontal Wells in CBM Reservoirs

Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 36th Ann. Conv., 2012

National fossil energy demand is being fulfilled by many alternate resources, including Coal Bed Methane (CBM), a type of unconventional hydrocarbon. Indonesia is thought to hold the sixth largest CBM reserves in the world, 453.3 TCF in 11 basins. Therefore, CBM offers high potential for future development in Indonesia. Reservoir heterogeneity and low permeability are common issues found in CBM reservoirs. Thus, advanced technology, such as hydraulic fracturing simulation, is required to increase the effective permeability. Hydraulic fracturing stimulation is conducted by injecting propant or surfactant in order to fracture the reservoir rock. In developing low permeability CBM reservoirs, the horizontal well is becoming a common alternative for improving production. In accordance with hydraulic fracturing theory, there are two types of fractures can be created in horizontal welsl: longitudinal fractures and transverse fractures. The hydraulic fracture will be longitudinal if the horizontal well is drilled perpendicular to the minimum stress direction and will be transverse if the horizontal well is drilled along the direction of minimum stress. Developing transverse hydraulic fracturing to multiple transverse in coal seams is expected to give a wider range of drainage directions. Then it applies the stimulation model by this method, it needs advance evaluation and finally it will show the sensitivity correlation. Several parameters in the CBM reservoir would be turned into a reservoir simulation, to investigate each parameter effect in having a correlation in multiple transverse hydraulic fracturing stimulation. The model in the simulator will provide a correlation to determine the optimal half length * UPN Veteran Yogyakarta fracture and the effectiveness of hydraulic fracturing in a CBM reservoir. This paper aims to reveal the opportunity in applying multiple transverse hydraulic fracturing on the horizontal well in CBM reservoirs and thus understanding its effects.
