HYDROCARBON SEEPAGE ANDACCUMULATIONSOil explorers use hydrocarbon seepage onshore to confirm an active source in a basin and to obtain samples from which the source can be characterised. On a regional scale there is a close relationship between active seepages and oil accumulations in a basin. In Southeast Asia there is substantial seepage onshore, some of which was recognised over 100 years ago. Until our recent survey, the distribution of seepage offshore, however, was largely unknown.
