SCC failure of 20", condensate pipeline
Year: 1993
Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 22nd Ann. Conv., 1993
A rupture occurred on November 27, 1992 in the condensate pipeline in .the Arun Field. Metallographic investigation concluded that the brittle fracture of the pipe was caused by environment-induced cracking (termed Stress Corrosion Cracking - SCC).The SCC failure was the result of combined and synergistic interaction of mechanical stresses and corrosion. Stress concentration at corrosion generated flaws (corrosion pits) was such, that a critical value of stress concentration was exceeded, resulting in crack propagation. The interaction between the mechanical stress and corrosion was simultaneous and time dependant. The SCC in the pipeline would not have happened if one of the factors was absent or if they functioned independently.
