Oil and gas sectors in Indonesia play important role as the major source of earnings, as dominant fuel to meet domestic energy need, as feedstock for petrochemical industry and creating substantial multiplier effect to national and local development. This role has to be maintained and enhanced by continuously developing oil and gas sector. One of the important aspects on promoting oil and gas development is the availability of good quality data that shows oil and gas potential across the country. This paper aims to present the recent government policy on data especially that related to oil and gas data. The policy is aimed at securing government data assets, managing and utilising the data to support oil and gas development in Indonesia. The government is fully aware of the role of data for oil and gas development and for other purposes and thus the data must be well maintained and managed. The recent regulation of the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Number 027 of 2006 on the Management and Utilization of Data Generated From General Survey, Exploration, and Exploitation Activities states that business entity and or contractors must submit the data generated from general survey, exploration, and exploitation activities no later than 3 months upon completion of data acquisition, processing, and interpretation. A technical guideline on the submission has also been disseminated to business entities and contractors. The government centralized oil and gas data repository center will provide a more effective and efficient data storage and management system both for the government and for oil and gas industries in general. The benefit for the oil and gas contractors is, among others, to reduce hardware and software investment, reduces disk space needs and archives activity as well as safe and effective data exchange.
