"Smart" Development Plans For South Belut Gas Field

Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 36th Ann. Conv., 2012

The South Belut Gas Field located in Block B, Natuna Sea was discovered by Conoco Indonesia Inc. in 1975 by the Belut-1 exploration well. The discovery was appraised by two further wells drilled in 1999 and 2008 respectively. The wells confirmed gas in sands of the Miocene fluvio-deltaic Arang and Udang formations at depths up to ~4,000 feet TVDSS. In addition, a small waxy oil column was found in the Udang formation in the western fault block area of the field. The field is highly faulted and compartmentalized. South Belut is one of several fields dedicated to supply gas to the GSA-1 contract with Singapore. The field is required to be on line to fulfill contractual obligations before the end of 2013. The development plan involves eight “smart” IWS (Intelligent Well System) subsea wells, with up to 4 selective completions per well. To optimally minimize costs and maximize recovery, the development plan for the field involves placing a single producer in each of the most significant fault blocks and controlling production from the individual reservoir zones via “smart” IWS subsea wells. The IWS will enable optimization of production by (1) eliminating cross-flow, (2) managing zones with water breakthrough, and (3) reducing or eliminating the potential for any flow assurance issues due to waxy crude oil production from the Udang. A full reservoir description is presented together with the evaluation that resulted in the recommendation to develop the South Belut Field with eight “smart” IWS subsea wells.
