The rocks of the Offshore South Kalimantan Area can be divided into two main groups. An earlier group of generally altered pre-Tertiary rocks separated unconformably from a series of sedimentary rocks ranging in age from Early Tertiary to Recent.The Karimundjawa Ridge which is a prominent broad structural feature of the area separates the main basins to the east from the Billiton Basin in the West. These two basinal areas have a somewhat different facies of deposition particularly in the Oligocene and Early Miocene. In the part of the Billiton Basin under consideration the environment of deposition in the Oligocene and beginning of the Early Miocene was continental (fresh water) whereas more marine conditions prevailed in the east during that time with variable amounts of limestone being deposited. The stratigraphy of both of these areas is discussed.
