Study of CO2 sequestration potential for storage and EOR

Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 31st Ann. Conv., 2007

Global warming as the result of a climate change that is directly linked to the emission of greenhouse gases especially CO2 has been the subject of much debate recently. This has been forcing industrial states that are producing a huge of CO2 to reduce its emission to the atmosphere as a measure to arrest global warming trend. Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) is one of the mechanisms under the Kyoto Protocol allows the developing countries in non Annex-1 countries to sell emission reduction from various CDM projects to the developed countries in Annex-1 countries. CDM would hopefully play an important role in promoting the reduction of Green House Gas (GHG) emission through CO2 sequestration activities in Indonesia.CO2 sequestration that consists of capturing CO2 from industry and then storing it in depleted oil and gas reservoirs has been considered as a third option for greenhouse gas mitigation alongside improved efficiency and low carbon fuels. It is believed that CO2 stored in depleted oil and gas reservoirs would contribute to the reduction of CO2 emitted through the atmosphere in the big scale. In order to assess the CO2 sequestration and its potential for Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) in Indonesia, we conducted reservoir geology screening, laboratory works, and reservoir modeling. A current study shows that east Kalimantan region can be selected as a potential candidate for CO2 sequestration project as many depleted oil and gas reservoirs are close to the CO2 sources. This paper describes a study of CO2 sequestration potential for storage and EOR on selected depleted oil reservoir in east Kalimantan region. The procedure of the study is explained, that includes reservoir screening for site selection, laboratory works and numerical simulation study. The authors believe this study would provide a standard guideline for determining CO2 sequestration potential for storage and EOR in depleted oil reservoirs.
