The Mengkapan Oil field, located in the Malacca Strait PSC area, was discovered by Hudbay Oil (Malacca Strait) Ltd. in May 1981. The field was developed during 1985 and 1986 with 10 production wells drilled from two offshore satellite production platforms, utilizing existing crude processing and export facilities located at the nearby Lalang field. The field commenced production in December 1986. Since early 1988, the field production rate and recovery factor have been improved through a programme of remedial workovers based on the results of an extensive production logging programme. This paper reviews the field performance both before and after the production logging and workover campaign, and highlights the resulting benefits gained in increased oil recovery.Hudbay Oils experience of using casing patches in preference to conventional cement squeezes for isolation of discrete reservoir zones, and the principles used to size very high rate downhole pumps in the Mengkapan field are also presented. One particular well, ME-2A, is used in the paper to illustrate the use of these techniques.
