Supporting oil drilling rigs in Indonesian swamps

Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 11th Ann. Conv., 1982

Drilling locations on hard ground have created conventional procedures for supporting drilling platforms. Depletion of oil reserves in easily accessible locations is forcing oil companies to extend their search for oil offshore to greater ocean depths and inland to remote marshes and swamps. This paper discusses deficiencies in the present method of constructing onshore platforms in areas where soil support is inadequate to prevent large settlements or displacements. Nonconventional methods of support which limit settlement are discussed. Examples of nonconventional methods of support used in Indonesia are given.
