There is a significant number of oil discoveries offshore Indonesia which are currently considered uneconomic to be developed using the conventional fixed pipeline and platform approach.Recent developments in the fields of subsea completion technology, flexible flowlines and floating production facilities have led to a new concept which should enable these reserves to be produced with attractive economic results.The concept is based on the repetitive use of mpbile production equipment, on a leasing basis, over a number of fields. It is particularly suited to Indonesia where there is not only a sufficient number of fields to justify the initial investment, but also the coordinating role of Pertamina, to ensure uninterrupted - use of the equipment over its useful life.The concept covers a number of different technical schemes, but in all cases the ability to connect the subsea wellheads to the floating production and storage facilities with reliable, and recoverable, flexible flowlines is a key element in achieving profitability.The selection of the optimum scheme, or schemes, depends on a statistical analysis of the marginal fields currently awaiting to be produced since it is essential that the main recoverable items of capital equipment i.e. Christmas trees, control systems, flowlines and floating production facilities, can be used on several fields.
