Underbalanced drilling (UBD) technology is a valuable instrument for lowering the unit cost of produced oil by increasing the hydrocarbon production per well and avoiding potentially hazardous and expensive drilling problems such as differential sticking and lost circulation. The recoverable reserves are potentially increased through reduction of reservoir impairment through invasive formation damage, so frequently illustrated with case histories of conventionally drilled wells, and conventional drilling techniques.Industry and equipment technological advancements have lead to UBD being much more widely accepted. This paper describes the major advantages of drilling underbalanced as well as details of recent underbalanced wells completed successfully for Kufpec in Indonesia in 1998.
