Background: The frequent disasters afflicting Indonesia have inspired many parties to strive to overcome them. These people may come from universities, military institutions, private companies, the government, NGOs, or may simply be the volunteers. They have differing competencies as well, for example, universities have management skills while private companies provide resources for transportation and logistics. Objectives: This paper aims to sensitize groups, institutions, and various actors on the importance of partnership between university and private corporations in order to ensure the effective emergency support for the population in disasterafflicted areas. Methodology: Case study analysis on disaster management in 4 regions of Indonesia. The case studies were analyzed from 2004 to 2009 (a fiveyear period). Summary of Results: Following a disaster event, various actors deliver emergency support to affected populations. While universities have many human resources for disaster management, they may lack of funding. On the other hand, private corporations have funding (e.g. from Corporate Social Responsibility budgets), but they have limited human resources for disaster management (especially medical personnel). The four disaster programs implemented by Gadjah Mada Medical School have partnership with private corporations. Most partnership began with the sending of medical emergency team to disaster area. Only in one place, private corporations support the disaster preparedness. This situation reflects the attention of private corporation to fund university if the disaster had been happened. This preference is actually not the best situation. In terms of providing support for preparedness especially a Hospital Disaster Plan, it is best carried out through in-house training (due to its tangible targeted output) instead of through workshops in classes or hotels. Moreover a postdisaster rehabilitation can be done through partnership between corporation and universities. In these efforts the finance should be managed under CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility). Conclusions: Coordination and collaboration among universities and corporations could improve the effectiveness and speed of disaster management. All stakeholders would benefit from this partnership. Private corporation should support not only if the disaster had happened. It is recommended for private corporation to finance disaster preparedness programs as well.
