Unlocking Near-Fault Attic and Updip Play in Latin Field, Rokan Block: A Success Story of Integrated Fault Interpretation and Real Time Drilling Monitoring

Latin Field is one of mature primary oil fields located in Rokan Block, Central Sumatera Basin. This field has hydrocarbon trap in three-way dip closure bounded by normal faults. Massive production at Latin Field leaves a very limited area for further development. The undrained area only left in the attic and updip structure from existing wells towards the fault. There is uncertainty in the fault interpretation from seismic data which is challenged to reach and drain those areas.

Integrated new methods of fault interpretation and real-time drilling monitoring for new wells is the best way to unlock the opportunity to drain the limited areas close to fault. New fault interpretation carried out by fault interpretation using seismic data with Fault-Horizon Enhancement and Thinned-Fault Likelihood attributes which are calibrated to well-fault markers to reduce the uncertainty of fault placement. The result will be used to optimize the design of new well trajectory remarkably close and maintain 15-30 meters distance along the fault plane with real-time drilling monitoring. This monitoring is performed by using rapid correlation method between modeled and actual log responses from Measurement-Logging While Drilling and cutting descriptions to ensure the actual well trajectory stays in target boundary. Pre-drill well model is constructed to predict the log responses of specific intervals countered along well trajectories against geological model based on surrounding wells properties. In the execution phase, geosteer well model updated in real-time by comparing the actual log data with modeled logs to validate actual subsurface conditions and correlate it to surrounding wells.

Success story of this integrated methods could be seen in 5 new wells result in 2021-2023 which succeeded in confirming that attic and updip areas towards the fault have not been drained by existing wells, produced 7674BOPD in the first test with estimated reserves of millions barrels.
