The Kakap KH Field operated by Marathon Petroleum Indonesia, Ltd. in the Natuna Sea was discovered in June 1980, and commenced production during March 1986. It is a mature field which has strong bottom water drive.To prevent gas and water coning, the original perforations were placed in the middle of the oil zone. As the wells produced, the oil-water contact moved upward towards the original perforations, causing the water cut to gradually increase.In order to increase the oil production rate, it was desired to reduce the water production by squeezing off the existing perforations and reperforating higher in the oil zone.Water shut-off using cement pumped through coiled tubing was selected because it could be performed more economically than a major workover. It has been applied and proven to be a cost-effective operation in the Kakap KH Field water shut-off program.
