Waterflooding surveillance and monitoring, practical approaches, a case review in southern Oman

Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 38th Ann. Conv., 2014

The paper illustrates how practical application of surveillance and monitoring principles are keys to understanding reservoir behavior and identifying potentials that could enhance oil recovery. Implementation of various principles recommended by industry experts is presented using examples from field currently in production. The field is located in the Southern of Oman, which has sandstone formation and a moderate oil gravity, and had been depleted with multiple flow units and it was decided that well to well injection would be beneficial to improve the sweep efficiency and reduce the cost. Practices on how to process valuable information and analyze data from different perspectives are presented in a methodological way on the following bases: field, block, pattern and wells. Diagnostic is also presented to assess well performance and identify the wells problem. Results from the application of these practices in the injection are indicating production improvements. That also attributed to the effective water-flood management with a methodological approach of integrated multi-department team. In this case, prioritization is a key aspect to maintain focus on the opportunities that will add most value during the depletion cycle. The practical efforts of utilizing the available resources will also be discussed here, including the start of the project and the current performance as well as the way ahead for the full field pattern achieved.
