Well performance optimization with electric submersible pump using production software

Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 30th Ann. Conv., 2005

The Electric Submersible Pump (ESP) system is one of the artificial lift methods. This tool consists of downhole equipment that is selected based on reservoir data, reservoir fluid characteristics, and completion. An appropriate pump selection can maintain well flowing pressure so that the flow rate will remain constant and the selected pump can work efficiently. Liquid rate performance is influenced by intake pressure, n-situ gas fraction, fluid properties, variable speed operation of pumps, pump types, and number of stages used. This paper analyzes production performance of X well in Y field especially on several XX ESP types using production software namely ESP type 1 to 6. The method used in this study is to compare and evaluate various performance outputs. Moreover, effects which influence well performance such as vertical multiphase flow problem and effective inside diameter size of tubing decreasing effect can be predicted. As the result of the analysis, ESP type 6 performs 4,493 STB/day which is the highest flow rate by using 190 stages, and frequency of 60 Hz at Static Pressure of 915 psig. While by natural flow, this well can only perform 1,296 STB/day. This condition can be optimized to gain 6,458 STB/day by using ESP type 6 with 231 stages, while the electric frequency is increased up to 90 Hz.At a Static Pressure of 800 psig, X well has its water cut and gas oil ratio increased. This condition makes the production performance decrease to 4,100 STB/day.The purpose of this paper is to decide the most effective type of pumps that can be used in X well and to optimize its performance. Water cut and gas oil ratio information in the future are applied in order to operate the selected pump safely and efficiently. Based on this study, the X well can produce the optimum flow rate which is expected.
