Wireline Coring Technology With Special Core Pipe Drasrically Improves Core Recovery, Case Study: Sho Wells, IH Field, South Sumatera

Wireline coring has been used commonly in Indonesia to determine the methane gas content of coal-bed methane wells and to reduce the loss of gas content during the process of retrieving core to the surface, but it is usually applied using standard API drilling or mineral technology pipe. In order to increase the speed of core retrieval during long periods of continuous coring jobs in SHO-01and SHO-2 well, wireline coring technology with a special core pipe (ID = 3 inch) has been used. This is the first time such technology has been applied in Indonesia. SHO-1 and SHO-2 are study wells located in IH Field, South Sumatra. The objective of these wells is to investigate the oil sand content in the down-flank of the area. By using a 450 HP truck mounted rig, SHO-1 and SHO-2 drilling programs were conducted to total depths of 1900 ft and 1820 MD respectively. Continuous wireline coring was done by using 6-1/8 inch core-head and special core pipe as long as 764 ft (core recovery 93.81%) and 554.73 ft (core recovery 98.66%) respectively. The core recovery improved by around 100% compared to the previous result using 6-inch hole conventional batch wireline coring application in 3 (three) South Sumatra coal-bed methane wells. In addition, core samples were bigger, ROP was higher, and footage costs were lower. Wireline coring technology with special core pipe has proven to be an effective and efficient way to increase the speed of core retrieval time and core recovery in SHO-01 and SHO-2.This technology is suitable for long interval coring, not only for low pressure reservoir wells, but also possibly for conventional oil and gas wells together with the use of pressure control equipment at surface.
